Power maintenance

General

Per year

Ask electrician to check the tightening of connections at all contactor and heating elements.

Measure power quality on all circuits (before and after LV board, inverters, before control panels, and after Transformers). Try to detect electrical harmonics (most of the time, these are generated by motors (fan, pumps, etc) regulators and can impact production activating breakers).

Using a thermal camera on all electrical equipment (and cables) is an excellent solution to identify potential future failures (heating = too much load).

Generator

Per year

Use the generator with load (min 30%).

Also, try using it with equipments behind, to reflect the exact emergency scenario (What about the connection between the generator and the IT equipment? How will the generator react to load? Etc. Only real scenario can answer these questions).

Generator should be checked by professional once a year.

Three time per year

Start generator with load (min 30%) and make it run during few hours.

Inverter

Per year

Inverter should be checked by professional once a year.

Encountered problems and solutions

Recurrent electrical disjunction

→ Main control panel circuit breaker

  • Check maximal power supported by the control panel and if possible current power used measured by probes.
  • Check temperature and cooling of the control panel. Check ambient humidity (for control panel and IT equipment).
  • Is the main control panel circuit breaker correctly calibrated?
  • If powering on cluster, try powering on gradually and not all equipment at the same time.

→ Equipment dedicated circuit breaker

  • Check equipment connections.
  • Check temperature and cooling of the control panel. Check ambient humidity (for control panel and IT equipment).
  • If possible, switch with another equipment to determine if IT hardware is faulty (switch plugs if presents).
  • Is the circuit breaker correctly calibrated for this equipment?

Power fluctuations

→ Behind inverter

  • Check inverter status.
  • Check if inverter is not set in by-pass mode.
  • Check presence of nonlinear electrical equipment (especially fan or pump speed controllers) on circuit behind inverter (electrical harmonic).

→ Before inverter

  • Check power quality from main electricity supplier.
  • Is this a coincidence? Are there any specific activities at the same time? (Maintenance, automatic planned equipment switch, etc.).
  • Check presence of nonlinear electrical equipment (especially fan or pump speed controllers) on circuit behind inverter (electrical harmonics). Cooling equipment are often the sources of electrical harmonics.
  • If not found and really problematic, use brute force method: measure fluctuations, and power of equipment one at a time to locate source of fluctuations (need production stop!).
